Who is Doug Johnson?
BRIEF HISTORY
Doug Johnson resides in
Fluvanna County with his wife of over 35 years, Peggy (Beach) Johnson,
their three adult children, Carrie, Lisa, and Faith, and their seven
grandchildren, Tyler, James, David,
Lauren, Jessica, Michael, and Matthew.
The oldest three grandchildren
attend public school now while the rest are still too
young.
While Doug's family is from the north, Peg's
dad, Warren Beach, was born in
Buckingham County and lived his last decades here in Fluvanna.
Doug's brother, Don, lives in Roanoke with most of his
family. Peg's brother, Cary, and sisters,
Susan and Pamela, all live here in Fluvanna.
Doug and Peg met at a youth meeting at Hillandale Baptist
Church while Doug was taking
graduate courses at the University of Maryland and American University in DC. Doug took a job in New
Jersey where they lived until
Peg took a nursing position at the UVA Medical Center Heart and
Vascular Unit in the late 90's.
COMMUNITY SERVICE
Doug is presently a Charter member of the Fluvanna
Rotary Club which formed in 2006. In the past he has been a member of other Rotary Clubs where he
served in various positions
including:
- President
- Vice President
- Treasurer and
- Vocational Committee Chairman.
Doug has also been active in politics. As
a young voter:
- He participated in a "Boston Tea Party" reenactment where boxes labeled "tea" were thrown in the Hudson River
to protest the New Jersey sales tax. (An event carried in a Jersey City newspaper.)
- He formed a Conservative Club while an undergraduate at Fairleigh Dickinson University.
- He served as a County Committeeman in Hudson County, NJ.
Now in Fluvanna, while he has served as Chairman of the Fluvanna
Committee of a major
political party, he is running as an independent without any party
endorsement.
Active in church groups, he has from
time to time been a Sunday School Teacher, led Bible
Studies, and given Christian Seminars.
He has participated in Ecumenical Discussion Groups. He
has written a number of Christian articles which can
be found on the website: www.independentchristian.org
Doug has conducted Self Improvement Workshops,
and addressed audiences of hundreds promoting the concepts of self motivation and continuing education.

Mathematics and Science in Secondary
Schools.

He has designed and constructed various experimental
scientific instrumentation including a Far Infrared Spectrometer, a Fabre Perot Interferometer, and cryogenic equipment.
After working as a Physicist for the Federal Government and
teaching at Fairleigh Dickinson
University, Doug has been self employed for most of his career. He
presently owns an internet business
which he conducts from his home.
PHILOSOPHY
Doug is a conservative - both a fiscal
conservative and a social conservative.
As a fiscal conservative, he believes that elected
officials have a duty to be frugal with
taxpayer's dollars. There are school systems that spend more
per student than Fluvanna and yet have
lower SOL scores.
Doug believes just as much in quality education
as anyone, even professional educators, but still
does not want to see waste. He believes alternate plans can be
generated with "out of the box"
approaches to fiscal dilemmas.
As a social conservative, Doug believes that you
cannot judge education on a purely academic
basis. Values that are taught at home and in church must not
be trampled on by a school system trying
to be both politically correct and devoid of any religious expression.
SUMMARY
Doug believes Fluvanna presently has an excellent school
system with excellent teachers and an
excellent administrative staff.
Doug and Peg with their family here in Fluvanna represents young families
with children attending Fluvanna public schools, working families commuting to Charlottesville, the self employed with
family businesses, and retirees living on fixed incomes.
Doug believes his background puts him in a unique position
to add creative ideas to improve and
maintain what we now have, without raising taxes so high that lifelong
residents need to leave the
county.
